If a tooth is badly damaged, the soft inner tissue of the tooth, called the pulp, can be put at risk of infection. Root canal treatment, or endodontic treatment, is the removal of the pulp after it has become exposed to infection. It’s a necessary treatment to save the tooth and surrounding tissues from further infection.

The treatment is performed by making an opening in the tooth and using special instruments to remove the pulp and clean the root chamber. Once the pulp is removed the tooth is filled and ready for restoration with a dental crown.
